Chapter Eighteen
I’ll spare the details of our dinner. We talked, we laughed, I refused to discuss the film, and then we sat in his car for a few minutes before he worked up the nerve to kiss me after making sure no one lingered near us. And after that, I drove home.
Okay, so the entire drive my heart raced like a rabbit on an energy drink. I’d just had my first date! With Elijah! I could hardly believe it, and after leaving him and waving as we drove off, I felt like it really had been just a dream. Could it have been the most vivid dream known to man? I mean, it was possible. Stranger things have happened, I guess.
By the time I pulled into my driveway I had almost convinced myself it had been a dream even though I could feel the lingering presence of his lips on mine and the warmth of his hand in my right hand. The lights were on in the house on both floors, and with a start I realized my phone hadn’t been on since I’d left the house.
My mother was going to kill me.
And then my grandmother would, too.
Knowing she would be waiting up, I let myself into her half of the house and found myself facing both my mother and grandmother who sat on the stiff couch in the living room.
The large television that occupied the corner of the room was conspicuously off, which did not bode well. They had been talking. That could only mean one thing.
“Hi.”
“We called you several times, Tristant,” my mother said, her lips turned down in a frown. A cup of tea sat on the side table next to her. Her arms were crossed over her chest and one leg crossed over the other.
My phone chose that moment to let me know I had five texts and three missed calls. “Sorry, I turned it off because of the movie. I forgot to turn it back on afterward.”
“Your mother was worried about you. She said you didn’t tell her who you were going out with.”
“No, it’s a bit of a long story. And oh, look at the time.” I faked a yawn. “I’m so tired. I’m going to head upstairs and get to bed.”
“You could have been hurt and we would have had no way of knowing what happened to you,” my grandmother added, her eyes narrowed behind her bifocal lenses.
I didn’t bother to answer. There was nothing I could say that would satisfy them at this point. Not when they were ready to begin the Spanish Inquisition.
“I’ll talk to you in the morning. Good night!” I said, sidling past the couch. My mother called after me, but I’d already dashed into my grandmother’s kitchen and used the back stairs to run up to our apartment. I hoped my mother would give me the space and privacy I wanted until the morning even though I didn’t have a bedroom door to close.
Luck appeared to be on my side because I crawled into bed without harassment from her.
